Relative indoor humidity levels affect indoor air quality. Therefore, it’s important to maintain control of humidity levels throughout the year, particularly during the summer and winter seasons. In this blog, AC repair contractor M&M Heating & Air Conditioning shares an overview on the importance of maintaining proper indoor humidity levels.
Relative Indoor Humidity
Indoor humidity levels range between 35% and 50%, relative to outdoor temperatures between 10 and 50 degrees. It’s important to note that indoor humidity levels change depending on the season. The winter season creates a dry environment that results in dry skin, nostril irritation and chapped lips. The moisture content of wood and paper drops, which can result in brittleness. Low indoor humidity can also cause dry eyes, which can lead to corneal damage.
The reverse happens in the summer. High indoor humidity allows allergens like mold, dust mites and bacteria to thrive, especially if humidity levels reach 55% or higher. Humid indoor spaces tend to be uncomfortable, and are often described as “sticky” and “stuffy”. The moisture in the air also tends to store heat, which can make the air feel warmer than it actually is. Fortunately, indoor humidity—relative to outdoor temperatures—can be controlled with the help of a capable AC repair contractor.
Controlling Indoor Humidity
The simplest way to control relative indoor humidity is to use a hygrometer to measure indoor humidity levels. Homeowners have reported feeling comfortable with relative humidity levels between 30% and 60%; however, the ideal levels are between 45% and 55%. Measure indoor humidity levels as indicated on your hygrometer’s user guide, then use your humidifier/dehumidifier to balance them out.
For an automated solution, you can have a whole-home humidifier/dehumidifier system integrated with your HVAC system and/or your smart home system. This lets you monitor indoor humidity levels using an easy-to-read panel. Advanced systems can even monitor seasonal changes and adjust the humidifier/dehumidifier output as needed.
